Praying for immigration reform

Heartache filled their stories. Thursday, men and women told members of different religions the troubles of being an illegal immigrant. “Please help us,” cried one illegal immigrant. Her plea was one of several made at the 2nd Annual Interfaith Convocation on Immigration Reform. Illegal immigrants said their reasons for breaking the law stem from a need to escape violence and poverty in their native countries. Several churches accept these reasons. At the First United Methodist Church in McAllen, members of Lutheran, Catholic, Methodist, Episcopal and Presbyterian churches prayed for immigration reform. They taught about how it can be achieved. One woman told Action 4 News she attended for the sake of her oldest son. She said he’s an illegal immigrant and about to graduate high school in the US. She wanted to know if he can get any help with citizenship because he’s a student. UTPA President Dr. Robert Nelsen said he believes students deserve more rights. “Those kids don’t have a future, unless we pass the DREAM Act, not unless we do the right thing,” said Nelsen. “They came over here with their parents. It was not their choice. They’re some of the brightest, best students I have.” Some statistics state illegal immigration cost US taxpayers 3 billion in 2010. Church leaders contest it’s not about the cost but about the human left with little choice but to try and make it in the US. Churches across the Valley are offering classes to answer any questions one may have

They should all be sent back and work on improving their own country. Not feeding off ours.

@robinked That’s exactly the problem. before they granted amesty an it helped but they did not secure the border. Now we have to secure the border even wit hheavy weapons if needed so the problem does not repeart itself in 20 years again. But they are not going back. they cannot stay undocumented because it will create many other problems for the society. Orderly, step-by-step legalization is a must and then secure the damn border. That’s an optimal solution in my oppinion. best

I too wanted to come to this blessed nation, but I chose to do it LEGALLY. If you choose to break the laws, then don’t cry when the consequences find you.

This is ridiculous….this woman brings her son here illegally but takes no responsibility in the problem this child faces. WE are told to do the right thing? How about illegals doing the right thing and going home. Americans who break the law face jail…. all they face is returning home to the country who’s flag they like to fly above the US flag

Carlos Tabera Gonzalez, 37, and Efran Ramirez Calderon, 34, were indicted by a federal grand jury with conspiring to distribute meth in Marshall County from 2002 until November 2011, according to a news release. The indictment also charges Calderon with distributing meth in Marshall County on Feb. 3, 2011.

Using teens & babies to tug on heartstrings. No wonder church benches aren’t as full these days. This tactic doesn’t work for me. I prefer legitimate immigrants who have had criminal background checks, contagious disease screenings, and have proof of financial support. Appreciate if they use genuine identification without having lied and committed a felony to get here……And to poster Bokismoki77 –you’re kidding, right? You insist on helping the children, then want to blow them up too.

We have to grant green cards to the undocumented immigrants already here in America, the land of immigrants and the brave. There is no other solutio nto immigration problems but amnesty and then securing the border with boots, fence, technology, whatever needed, even mines for the goodness of our children. God Bless America and all Americans.
